Gauteng, January 2008 - The Gauteng Provincial Government ended the year on a high note, when they launched two of their Thusong Service Centres, as part of the plan to have a Thusong Service Centre in every municipality by 2014.

The two Centres, Impumelelo and Onverwacht where launched on the 25 and 31 October respectively.

This came as a result of coordinated efforts of all stakeholders including the Provincial Inter - Sectoral Steering Committee led by the Office of the Premier in Gauteng, the District Inter-Sectoral Steering Committees, and Local Inter-Sectoral Steering Committees.

Other organisations which played a critical role are various service providers rendering effective services to the communities at the Centres, such as the:

  • Department of Home Affairs
  • Department of Social Development
  • Department of Labour
  • Department of Public Service and Administration (Community Development Workers)
  • South African Social Security Agency
  • GCIS
  • Gauteng on line, and many others.

Both events enjoyed the presence of various political leaders and entertainment by various local community groups. The activities of the day included a formal programme, exhibition stalls, cutting of the ribbon, official site visit, and unveiling of the plaque.

The Impumelelo launch received media coverage from East Rand Community Radio station, and the GCIS video section covered the Onverwacht launch.
