The Bojanala District Substance and Drug Abuse Association (BODISAC) has scored yet another goal of success by establishing and producing beautiful beads in a skills development project at Leretlhabetse Thusong Service Centre in North West Province.

The manager of the project, Violet Mabua, did not mince her words as she explains about their success. “As an organisation, we implemented this initiative a year ago and it has resulted in a completely new paradigm planning and project management in the district,” she said. “This helps to boost local economic growth in the rural area,” she added.
Mabua said the skills development project recruits the unemployed youths from Lebotloane and the surrounding villages and teaches them beads work at Leretlhabetse Thusong Service Centre.

The organisation which consists of six volunteers started five years ago, operating as councilors for the youths who are affected and infected by drugs in the Bojanala District municipality. Last year they climbed the ladder of success by starting the beads work and sewing project.

BODISAC, as they are affectionately known in the Bojanala District municipality, acquired the sewing machines from the Department of Social Development. They make beads work, pillows, pillow cases and puppets.

In addition to their success, they have made significant strides by penetrating the local market in Lebotloane and the surrounding villages. Their beadworks are needed by members of the community.

“Members of the community usually buy pillows and pillow cases from us and we want to reach all the community of Moretele Local Municipality in future,” Mabua said.

Mabua concluded by saying the project keeps the youths busy and also help them to stay away from the streets and drug substances.
