The much anticipated launch of the Mafatsana Thusong Service Centre took place on 3 October 2008, coinciding with the commencement of Social Development Month, which highlights programmes aimed at fighting poverty and building a caring society for a better life for all.

Approximately 2600 members of the public attended the event and amongst the dignitaries whom graced the former were officials from the three spheres of governmen,; MEC Nomvula Mokonyane from the Gauteng Department of Housing, the Executive Mayor of Emfuleni, Clr Mshudulu and the Chairman of the Evaton Development Forum, Mr Tutu Molefe, to cite but a few.

Mr Tutu Molefe welcomed everyone in attendance and subsequently the Executive Mayor Mshudulu gave a synopsis on progress regarding the Evaton Renewal Programme projects. The MEC presented the keynote address with a particular emphasis on the importance of Thusong Service Centres and pivotal services which communities are entitled to.

The highlight of the event was manifested by the MECs' visit to Mafatsane Thusong Service Centre and the ribbon cutting, the handing over of cheques for land releases and keys for newly upgraded houses to owners as well as refuse removal trucks and bins to the Emfuleni Council. Winners of the poem reciting competition were awarded with laptops.

The event was characterised by exhibitions and performances from local cultural groups and artists. The Office of the Premier sponsored catering for all present and activities of the day were rounded off by a vote of thanks delivered by Ward Councilor, Mr Morolong.  The launch received good coverage both from the national and local community media.
