Tombo Thusong Service Centre formally known as Multi-Purpose Community Centre was the first centre to be piloted in South Africa. It was officially launched on the 5th March 1999 by the former Premier of the Eastern Cape, Rev Makhenkesi Sitofile. The idea behind the establishment of Thusong Centres was to bring integrated government services closer to the people where they live.
The following services are offered at Tombo Thusong Centre:

  • Health services
  • Arts and culture development
  • Adult Basic education
  • Education
  • Access to government information
  • Water and Sanitation queries
  • Visit by Home Affairs every Wednesday s and
  • Postal services

A new service has been added for the community of Tombo, Shovalula bicycle spares. This is an initiative by Department of Transport to support unemployed youth. Vusumzi Mjaco from Mgxabakazi Village under Tombo administration area, ward 4 is the proud owner of Shovalula Bicycle spares. This programme is fully funded by the Department of Transport. It provides services to all the schools under Libode mega using bicycles as their mode of transport for learners traveling long distances. Local bicycle owners are also welcomed as Shovalula Bicycle Spares provides spares and fixing for all bicycles.
